Neurodiversity

What does it mean?

Neurodiversity is a concept that recognises and respects the variations in human brain function and behaviour. Differences in neurological development, such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other cognitive differences, are natural variations and should be celebrated and accommodated.

Neurodiversity Affirming Approach

A neurodiversity affirming approach in speech therapy embraces and respects the unique differences in neurological functioning, such as Autism, ADHD, dyslexia, developmental language disorder and many others.

This approach focuses on celebrating differences and providing tailored support rather than attempting to 'correct' them.

The term "neurotypical" is used to describe individuals whose neurological development and functioning aligns with societal norms, while "neurodivergent" refers to those whose neurological development is different than what society expects.
